New Mpox case confirmed in Zaragoza, marking 198 Spanish cases in 2025

A new Mpox infection has been confirmed in Zaragoza. This brings the total to 198 cases in Spain by 2025.

The second Mpox outbreak in Aragon this year has prompted public health officials to urge caution.

The Epidemiological Bulletin of Aragon confirms a second Monkeypox case in Zaragoza (Spain) between May 26th and June 1st 2025. The regional Department of Health has stated that “appropriate preventive and control measures have been taken”, cited by El Espanol.

Aragon has now reported its second monkeypox infection in 2025 after not being affected by the disease for all of 2024. Five cases were reported in 2023. Aragon Digital.

What is monkeypox?

Monkeypox is also called Mpox. It’s a viral disease which can cause:

  • High fever
  • Headache
  • Muscle pain and fatigue
  • Swollen lymph nodes (neck, groin, armpits)
  • A distinct skin rash that is similar to chickenpox

The rash usually appears between 1 and 4 days after the fever starts. It begins as flat spots that then develop into raised bumps, followed by pus-filled boils.

Incubation lasts 7-14 days with symptoms lasting between 2 and 4 weeks.

How is Mpox transmission transmitted?

According to health officials Mpox can spread through:

  • Close contact with body fluids and lesions
  • Contaminated items or materials (like bedding, clothing or other objects)
  • Respiratory droplets after prolonged face-toface interaction

Public Health Department: “Anyone who is exposed to the virus can become infected.”

Mpox in Spain & the rest of the World

Spain has confirmed an overall total of 8,737 cases since April 20,22. In 2025, there were 198 reported cases.

From January 1, 2024 to May 8, 2020, the World Health Organization reported 69 cases of clade 1b from travellers returning to non-endemic nations. This breakdown includes:

  • UK (12) – where community transmission is confirmed
  • Germany and India (10 each).
  • China (7). Belgium (5) Thailand (5) Qatar (5)
  • USA (4) France (3) UAE (2)
  • Canada, Oman Pakistan, Sweden, Brazil and Switzerland: Single cases

Health alerts for Zaragoza

The bulletin confirmed that:

  • 1 case of Listeriosis. This bacterial infection is spread by contaminated food and animal contact.
  • Leptospirosis is a disease that occurs when water contaminated with animal urine enters the body.

Why should we be concerned about Mpox

The severity of the symptoms and the worldwide travel connection make monkeypox/Mpox an issue. Public health authorities emphasize the importance of early diagnosis and isolation, with nearly 200 cases reported in Spain in this year. Infections are also on the rise in Europe. Mpox vaccination has been discussed, but it is currently only recommended for high-risk people in Spain.
